Custom technical solutions made by FastSailing

Working with high performance sailboats that have a demanding sailing programme obliges us to come up with some practical solutions. We are happy to share some of these ideas with the sailing community:

-Staysail hanks made with low friction rings
The two usual problems with staysail hanks (aluminum, dyneema, or classic bronze) is that only they cause chafing on the baby stay and they often get stuck when moving up or down. Therefore, we came up with this neat solution with low friction rings connected with soft shackles to the staysail that run super smoothly!

-Low friction ring bumpers
The 3-D sheeting points on modern sailing boats have a tendency to hit violently the coach roof, especially when let loose during tacking. Using a 3-D printer we came up with these add-on donuts made with compressible elastic rubber. Credits to our boat captain Stathis, who spends some of his nights crafting 3-D printing jewels!

-Teflon bases for stanchions
The classic circular feet on stanchions are too rigid and too small, so when a sheet or another boat pushes them violently sideways, they tend to pierce through the composite deck. We, therefore, added those extra rings made with our 3-D printer that are softer and offer a wider bearing surface.

-Free standing bimini for Pogos
In Greece a spray hood is rarely needed during April-October (it may even be undesirable) but a bimini is certainly more than necessary. Therefore, we designed free standing biminis that:

  • do not require a spray hood to be zipped on
  • are compatible with all sailing maneuvers on Pogos including sailing under main+spi+staysail
  • are stable and functional even with 35kts of wind
