Aegean600 on the Pogo50: 4th in real time, what an experience!
During 4-8/July we raced the inaugural edition of the Aegean600 race on board the Pogo50 and the excitement still resonates in our souls. This is by all means (one of) the greatest offshore race of up to 1000nm: tough, tactical, versatile, in the world’s most beautiful sailing playground, the Aegean sea.
Our Pogo50 Eros, under the guidance of our skipper and navigator, Andrea Caracci and with a multinational charter crew, finished 4th out of 39 boats in real time. Ahead of us a Farr72, a TP52 and a beautiful Scuderia65. Behind us many fast boats: Swan62, Farr45, One-off full carbon 46 racer, Xp44, X4.6…
Poseidon did not offer us the much expected downwind ride of our lives for the first 300nm. Instead we had to negotiate light south winds till Kassos island, after which the meltemi finally came but we were already pointing upwind towards the north.
The critical point of the race was at the south side of Kassos island, were we managed to overpass 6 boats by “reading” correctly the clouds and local conditions, a tactical move for which Andrea Caracci deserves full credit. During the ~300nm upwind part that followed, we managed to maintain and extend our lead from the boats that tried to chase us.
Congratulations to all the team: Andrea, Alex, Alexis, Celine, John, Michalis, Ruslan, Stavros, Theodora and Tim.
Already looking forward to competing the 2022 Aegean600 edition.

See you there!
Sailing destinations: Leonidio & Fokianos bay. So close, so beautiful
Some times the Saronic gulf gets crowded. This is a good opportunity to head to the picturesque port of Leonidio (Plaka) and the nearby Fokianos bay. They are located just ~65nm from Lavrio
The little town of Leonidio has a nice, deep, and safe port called Plaka Leonidiou, with its own settlement. There is everything you need in this tiny seafront village: good tavernas, minimarket, water, two beaches. All in a beautiful scenery with the steep hills right above the sea.
Highlights:
- For those who love rock climbing , in Leonidio there are over 2500 (yes!) routes of all levels in the 250m high nearby crags.
- Excellent fresh fish
- Try the local eggplants (aubergines)
- Ducks swim around the little fresh water stream exiting in the middle of the port
Fokianos bay is just a few miles south of Leonidio. The best spot for anchoring is the little inner cove in the north east where there is even a small dock. You can go there for a swim, or even spend the night.
Unspoiled natural beauty, good shelter, olive trees down until the sea front, crystal clear waters…one of these places that make you think: this is why we love sailing in Greece!
